How to create killer domain names

by Jozef on February 16, 2009

I always have a problem to creating good domain names. Partially because English is not my mother language, and partially because it is very hard to ‘guess’ which word combination will ’stick’.

But now there is a great way, almost automatic step-by-step process how to do it. In his book Blink, Malcolm Gladwell illustrated, that some words have strong, subliminal effect on peoples’ emotions. And as we know, sale is all about emotions.

The list of such words is shown in this fantastic article http://traffictacticsblog.com/blog/?p=51.

So how to use it to generate great domain names?

Let’s say we want to sell kitchens and we need to create a sticky domain name for our web shop.

Here is how to find the great domain names:

  • create a simple Excel sheet with word ‘kitchen’ and all the subliminal words like this:

excel sheet

  • word ‘kitchen’ is in the 1st and 2nd column, so we can generate word combinations with subliminal words before and after word ‘kitchen’
  • open bulk registration page on GoDaddy - http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/registrar/bulk/bulk.asp
  • copy first two columns from the sheet to the bulk registration box - these are “kitchen <subliminal word>” combinations
  • than copy second two columns to the bulk registration box
  • enter access code and hit ‘Search’

Now you will see which domain names are available and which are not.

Some of the free interesting domain names are:

KITCHENALTERNATIVE.COM
KITCHENBLOCKBUSTER.COM
KITCHENBREAKTHROUGH.COM
KITCHENCORPORATION.COM
KITCHENDELIVERED.COM
KITCHENEXPLAINED.COM
KITCHENEXPOSED.COM
ADVICEKITCHEN.COM
ASSISTANTKITCHEN.COM
ASTONISHINGKITCHEN.COM
BLOCKBUSTERKITCHEN.COM
BREAKTHROUGHKITCHEN.COM
EXPERTSKITCHEN.COM
GUARANTEEDKITCHEN.COM
CHAMPIONKITCHEN.COM
IMPROVEDKITCHEN.COM
POWERFULKITCHEN.COM
PROSKITCHEN.COM
REVIEWKITCHEN.COM
REVOLUTIONARYKITCHEN.COM
SECRETSKITCHEN.COM
UNBELIEVABLEKITCHEN.COM

Cool!

Thank you for your post!
Well I think Web 2.0 domain name like that is completely different story. I guess more creativity is needed in that case.
